ANTIQUE – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Antique has registered 6,652 applicants for the 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) through its 18 municipal election offices from August 1 to 6.
“So far, the turnout for the BSKE 2025 registration is going okay with voters coming in every day,” Provincial Election Supervisor Hazel Palencia said in an interview on Thursday, August 7.
She said the registration at Robinsons Mall in San Jose de Buenavista town was convenient for applicants who also took time to shop after their official transaction.
“As of now, we are waiting for an official announcement as to when the BSKE 2025 will really be, whether it will push through this December 1, 2025,” Palencia said.
She added that they would just continue with their registration until Sunday, August 10, unless there is a new directive for the voter registration.
Meanwhile, the bill postponing the December 2025 BSKE to next year is set to lapse into law by August 14, according to the Comelec on August 6.
Comelec Chairperson George Garcia said the measure is awaiting the signature of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
“We have information that it seems there will be no formal ceremony. The bill will just lapse into law by Aug. 14 so the postponement of BSKE will automatically become law,” he said in an interview. “Based on the computation, it’s Aug. 14.”
At the same time, Garcia reiterated that they will continue to prepare for the December 1 BSKE, as he is certain that the law would be questioned before the Supreme Court (SC).
In the event the bill is signed or lapsed into law, Garcia said he sees nothing wrong with that.
“As long as the Comelec is there, we’ll just continue with the preparations. Because someone will question that in the SC,” he added.
Once the postponement bill is signed, the holding of the BSKE will be moved to November 2026. (PNA)
