ILOILO – The provincial government’s P24-million annual investment in education is paying off, with its flagship Iskolar sang Iloilo Program (ISIP) producing dozens of Latin honor graduates this year, including a Summa Cum Laude.
In recognition rites on Aug. 6 at the Grand Xing Imperial Hotel, officials honored ISIP Batch 25 and 26 — comprising one Summa Cum Laude, 28 Magna Cum Laude, and 40 Cum Laude awardees from top universities across the province.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. hailed the graduates for their grit and urged them to use their success to uplift others.
“Now, it is your turn to shape a better future — not only for yourselves, but for your families and communities. As you find your place in society, carry with pride the values of an ISIP scholar: integrity, service, and excellence,” Defensor said.
“May your achievements inspire other young Ilonggos to dream boldly and work tirelessly. The Iloilo Provincial Government, together with your families, celebrate your success with immense pride,” he added.
The latest honorees came from the University of the Philippines Visayas (3), Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (13), Northern Iloilo State University (15), Iloilo Science and Technology University (37), West Visayas State University (42), and Passi City College (1).
Established in 1996 by then-governor Arthur Defensor Sr., ISIP supports scholars with a monthly living allowance of P3,500, P3,000 per semester for learning resources, and P5,000 in thesis or research assistance.
Latin honor graduates receive cash incentives—P7,000 for Summa Cum Laude, P5,000 for Magna Cum Laude, and P3,000 for Cum Laude.
Beyond college, scholars graduating with honors also gain a competitive edge through Gullas College of Medicine’s Certificate of Merit and full medical scholarships, including free board, meals, and stipends.
Since its inception, ISIP has produced over 1,400 graduates, many now serving in key roles in various industries, driving Iloilo’s development.
The event was attended by Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, Vice Gov. Lee Ann Debuque, Atty. Renee Valencia of the Human Resource Management and Development Office, provincial board members, and municipal mayors./PN
