Iloilo City honors 10 outstanding Ilonggos on 88th Charter Day

TEN exemplary Ilonggos were recognized for their significant achievements across diverse fields ahead of the city’s 88th Charter Day celebration.

This year’s Ten Outstanding Ilonggos – who brought pride to Iloilo and inspire future generations – embody the spirit of resilience, innovation, and service that Iloilo City continues to uphold as it celebrates its 88th Charter Day with the theme, “Celebrating 88 Years of Resilient Innovations for Sustainable Empowerment.”

The awarding ceremony will be held during the Mayor’s Dinner this Monday, August 25, at the Ann Margaret Hall of Diversion 21 Hotel in Mandurriao district.

Filmmaker Nicolas “Nick” Deocampo os known for his pioneering work in alternative cinema and gender advocacy, using films, books, and festivals to amplify historical narratives and LGBTQ+ voices. As described by Roger Garcia, a Hong Kong film critic and festival executive, Deocampo’s “pioneering work created a new generation of alternative filmmakers who gained international recognition.”

Engineer Fulbert Woo has designed life-saving oxygen systems, mentors young entrepreneurs, and spearheads civic empowerment programs that merge engineering with nation-building.

Entrepreneur Ernesto A. Borromeo Jr. is a known catalyst for local economic growth through his ventures, including Ocean City Seafood Restaurant and Dynasty Finance Corporation. 

Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, president of West Visayas State University, for over 25 years, has been shaping medical education and strengthening public governance.

In the field of maritime education and research, Dr. Brian Gil S. Sarinas is an authority on seafarers’ mental health and marine conservation. 

Economist Winston Conrad B. Padojinog is beingrecognized for guiding industries, non-government organizations, and local governments toward sustainable and inclusive growth.

Licensed real estate broker Dante Villanueva Aguilar is also an award-winning writer and international book author.

Dr. Anjuli May P. Jaen exemplifies Ilongo excellence through her unwavering dedication to healthcare innovation. Her work, particularly in respiratory medicine and vaccine research, has shaped evidence-based practice worldwide.

Fashion designer and LGBTQ+ advocate Ramonito B. Silva, popularly now as Ram Silva, promotes local artisans and ingenious fabrics.

Nurse-leader Ralph Lauren Torre Figueroa has contributed significantly to the city’s healthcare system and beyond by demonstrating excellence in nursing service administration, hospital operations, education, and research.
