CAPIZ – The provincial government has launched a health program dedicated to patients with X-linked Dystonia Parkinsonism (XDP), marking a significant step in the province’s efforts to address rare neurodegenerative diseases.

The initiative was formally introduced on Friday, Sept. 5, at the Circulo Convention Center in Pueblo de Panay, Roxas City, with the theme “NCD Management: Hope for XDP Patients and Families Towards Healthiest Capisnons.”

Designed to provide comprehensive support and treatment, the program seeks to improve early diagnosis, expand access to specialized care, and establish long-term support systems for patients and their families.

XDP, also known as Dystonia of Panay, is a movement disorder that primarily affects Filipino men. Early symptoms often include Parkinsonism — characterized by tremors, muscle stiffness, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), poor balance, and a shuffling walk that can lead to frequent falls.

The program launch was led by the Capiz Provincial Health Office (CPHO), with Provincial Health Officer II Dr. Ramon Alex T. Nolasco and Roxas Memorial Provincial Hospital Chief Dr. Florencio O. Luching in attendance. Their participation highlighted the importance of a collaborative approach to strengthening healthcare services for XDP patients.

Action plans presented during the event included community outreach programs, specialized training for health workers, and the creation of patient support groups to enhance quality of life.

Representing Gov. Fredenil Castro at the launch, Provincial Administrator Arthur Biñas reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to prioritizing healthcare initiatives, particularly for vulnerable sectors.

Also present were district hospital leaders, barangay health workers, and other stakeholders who pledged support for the program.

Provincial officials emphasized that the launch reflects Capiz’s broader commitment to addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs), providing hope to XDP patients and their families, and ensuring equitable healthcare access for all Capisnons./PN
