Guimaras dragon fruit festival aims for bigger tourism and economic boost

GUIMARAS – The provincial government is banking on dragon fruit to become the island’s next signature crop and tourism draw, as it stages the 4th Dragon Fruit Festival from September 4 to 7.

Data from the Provincial Office for Agricultural Services show that Guimaras has expanded dragon fruit cultivation to 22.44 hectares with 21,077 posts and at least 41 active producers — making it a high-value crop alternative during the mango off-season.

Officials said the festival, which has already generated P22 million in tourism receipts over the past three years, is proof that the fruit can fuel both farm income and local tourism.

Guimaras’s Cong. Lucille Nava said the festival goes beyond food promotion.

“Dragon fruit is more than just food, it represents livelihood, health, and pride for our people. This festival supports our farmers, inspires our youth, and reminds us that Guimaras can innovate while staying rooted in our agricultural traditions,” Nava said.

Provincial Economic and Development Officer and concurrent Tourism Officer Francis Gentoral added that the event has drawn nearly 15,000 tourists since its launch and is now a staple in the province’s tourism calendar.

This year, organizers are targeting a 25 percent increase in arrivals.

“We continue this festival not only to provide additional income for dragon fruit farmers but also to promote value-adding. From food to arts, dragon fruit has become a symbol of Guimaras’ creativity and resilience,” Gentoral said.

Festival highlights include a weekend market at the Provincial Capitol Grounds, farm pick-and-pay activities, and the Dragon Fruit Food Fest, where restaurants and resorts will serve dragon fruit-inspired dishes and drinks.

“Every visitor who comes here not only supports our farmers but also contributes to the growth of our small businesses — restaurants, hotels, and transport services. The ripple effect is immense,” Gentoral stressed.

Nava also cited the fruit’s health benefits, including high antioxidant, fiber, and vitamin C content.

“Promoting dragon fruit means promoting wellness. Every bite is not just delicious, it’s also a step toward healthier communities,” she said./PN
