MANILA — With corruption scandals roiling government flood control projects and street protests looming, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Tuesday reminded the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) that their allegiance must never waver from the Constitution and the Filipino people.
“Today is not only a milestone, but a renewed pledge that your loyalty remains with the Constitution and the Filipino people. Always act with integrity, uphold the rule of law, defend our democracy,” Marcos declared as he swore in newly promoted generals and flag officers in Malacañang.
The timing of his message was striking: the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice Andres Reyes Jr., launched its probe the same day into alleged anomalies in multibillion-peso flood control projects.
Empowered to subpoena documents, summon witnesses, and recommend charges, the inquiry has intensified public debate ahead of Sept. 21 demonstrations demanding accountability in public works spending.
Marcos praised the AFP’s service in disaster response and defense cooperation, but reminded officers that each star on their shoulders carries a heavier burden.
“You have shown our people and the world that the Filipino soldier is always ready to save lives, deliver relief and rebuild communities,” the President said.
“Rest assured that this administration will do the best it can to provide you with the resources you need so you can focus on your duty,” he added.
Closing his remarks, Marcos urged soldiers to be guardians of peace and defenders of freedom. “Guard the peace we have gained and deepen our ties with partners who also envision a freer, more stable region,” he said./PN
