ILOILO City – With thousands of spectators expected to converge for the Dinagyang Festival and other major celebrations across Western Visayas, the Department of Health (DOH) has issued a public health advisory warning festivalgoers to take extra precautions against illness, heat-related conditions, and foodborne diseases.
The advisory, released in coordination with the Iloilo City government, comes amid concerns that large, tightly packed gatherings heighten the risk of disease transmission and medical emergencies.
“While we celebrate our culture and traditions, it’s crucial to protect ourselves and those around us,” a DOH Region 6 representative said.
Health officials reminded the public that festivals, while festive and culturally significant, also expose participants to prolonged heat, fatigue, unsanitary food handling, and close physical contact — conditions that can easily trigger health incidents if precautions are ignored.
Vulnerable groups advised to stay home
DOH-6 advised senior citizens, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems to avoid attending crowded events, citing their higher risk of complications from infectious diseases.
Those already experiencing fever, cough, sore throat, or other flu-like symptoms were also urged to stay home to prevent spreading illness during the festivities.
Precautions stressed during celebrations
Festivalgoers were reminded to wear light, breathable clothing, use comfortable footwear, and remain hydrated throughout the day. The health agency also encouraged the public to wear face masks in dense crowds and practice frequent hand sanitation.
Attendees were advised to bring bottled water, umbrellas, towels, extra clothing, and basic emergency kits containing alcohol, hand sanitizer, maintenance medicines, and first aid supplies.
DOH-6 also urged participants to familiarize themselves with the locations of first aid and medical stations around festival venues.
The agency further warned against unsafe food consumption, reminding revelers to buy only from hygienic food vendors to avoid food poisoning. Smoking and vaping in crowded areas were discouraged, along with bringing sharp or potentially dangerous objects that could cause injury.
Post-festival monitoring encouraged
After attending events, DOH-6 advised the public to bathe immediately, change clothes, and observe proper hygiene. Festivalgoers were urged to monitor themselves for symptoms such as fever, cough, colds, rashes, or other unusual signs, and to seek medical consultation if symptoms develop.
Health officials emphasized that early detection and prompt treatment are crucial in preventing the spread of disease following mass gatherings.
