2026 will not be business as usual – Why WV businesses must prepare now

OUR RECENTLY concluded webinar, which gathered close to a hundred business owners and chief executive officers (CEOs) from the Philippines and overseas, affirmed a clear shift in mindset: leaders are no longer asking if change is coming. They are now asking how to prepare — and how quickly they must act.

One of the most compelling voices in the webinar was Mr. Steven Cua, executive director of the Philippine Amalgamated Supermarkets Association (PAGASA). His message was direct, practical, and timely — especially for businesses operating on tight margins amid growing uncertainty.

2026 a Turning Point, Not Just Another Year

Year 2026 will not be business as usual. Geopolitics, inflation, supply chain disruptions, interest rates, rapid technological shifts, and evolving consumer behavior are no longer distant or abstract. They are already influencing everyday decisions — from pricing and procurement to staffing, expansion, and survival.

For many enterprises in Western Visayas — where businesses are often family-owned, SME-driven, and closely tied to local markets — these shifts can feel even more disruptive. And whether a company employs 20 people or 20,000, it does not matter — no one will be spared. The difference will be preparation. In times like these, knowledge is power.

As Steve emphasized, success in 2026 will depend less on size or legacy and more on discipline, focus, adaptability, and execution.

Focus, Efficiency, and Relationships Will Define Winners

In uncertain times, focus becomes a competitive advantage. Leaders must ask tough questions: Which products truly make money? Which customers matter most? What activities create value — and which quietly drain cash and energy? The businesses that win will do fewer things, but do them exceptionally well.

Efficiency today is not about blind cost-cutting. It is about removing waste without weakening capability. Small inefficiencies repeated daily become serious losses over time. In 2026, inefficiency will be expensive and unforgiving.

Equally important are relationships. Reliable suppliers and partners will matter more than the cheapest price. Businesses that invest in long-term, trust-based partnerships will enjoy greater stability, better terms, and flexibility when disruptions occur.

Cash Flow and Creativity Are Non-Negotiable

Profit is important, but cash flow keeps businesses alive. With higher interest rates and tighter credit, disciplined cash management will separate survivors from casualties.

At the same time, copying others is no longer a safe strategy. Consumers are more cautious, selective, and value-driven. Businesses must rethink how they differentiate, deliver value, and serve customers. Creativity does not always require expensive innovation; often, it begins with the courage to challenge old assumptions.

Why February 3 in Iloilo Matters

These realities are precisely why the business forum on Tuesday, February 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Sam’s 21 Hotel in Iloilo City is timely and critical.

I will be flying in from Singapore specifically to share insights from my research and my experience sitting on boards across Asia — working with family-owned enterprises, SMEs, and large organizations navigating uncertainty, succession, and strategic transformation.

Joining me are Engr. Fulbert Woo, president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry Iloilo and Prime Gas, and Mr. Ted Valderrama, Operations Head of Theo’s Restaurant and Angelina’s Bakeshop, who bring grounded, real-world operational perspectives.

This gathering is not about fear. It is about readiness. It is about helping business owners anticipate uncertainty, embrace new ideas, and make smarter decisions before disruption forces reaction.

The Bigger Message

Year 2026 will not be business as usual — but it does not have to be business as reckless either. Businesses that stay informed, remain flexible, manage cash well, build strong partnerships, and embrace new ways of thinking can still grow.

The future belongs to organizations that prepare early, think clearly, and act decisively.

2026 is here. The real question is no longer what will happen, but how ready are we?
