MANILA – Two impeachment complaints filed against Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio have been formally transmitted to the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, House Secretary General Cheloy Velicaria-Garafil said.
Garafil said on Friday morning that the documents were sent Thursday afternoon after her office finished processing and verifying the complaints and their endorsements.
“Upon receipt and verification of the complaints and their accompanying endorsements, the Office of the Secretary General forwarded the documents to the Office of the Speaker for appropriate action,” she said.
The first verified complaint was initiated by members of the Makabayan Coalition and endorsed by ACT Teachers party-list’s Cong. Antonio Tinio, Gabriela Women’s Party’s Cong. Sarah Jane Elago, and Kabataan party-list’s Cong. Renee Louise Co.
Listed among the complainants are current and former progressive legislators and leaders, including France Castro, Arlene Brosas, Liza Maza, Neri Colmenares, Renato Reyes Jr., and Raymond Palatino.
A separate impeachment complaint was endorsed by Mamamayang Liberal Pprty-list’s Cong. Leila de Lima and Akbayan party-list’s Cong. Perci Cendaña. Its petitioners include representatives from progressive groups and civil society, among them Francis Joseph Aquino Dee, Sylvia Estrada Claudio, Teresita Quintos Deles, former Ifugao Rep. Teodoro Baguilat Jr., and labor leader Josua Mata.
Meanwhile, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has declined to comment on impeachment case involving Duterte-Carpio.
“Now… I have no reaction. Hindi ko trabaho ’yan… trabaho ’yan ng House,” the Chief Executive said. “Pabayaan mo silang magtrabaho and I’m sure they will handle it properly so just let them do their jobs.”
In a statement, lawyer Michael Poa, who serves as spokesperson for Duterte-Carpio’s defense, said the latest moves against the Vice President were expected and insisted that impeachment must be grounded on evidence and due process, not political pressure.
Poa cited a Supreme Court ruling, stressing that impeachment “is not merely a political process initiated by mere allegations or by perceived public acclaim shaped by the propagandistic effect of timed press releases or irresponsible viral posts on social media.”
He said the defense is ready to address the claims through proper legal channels.
“We are prepared to confront these allegations squarely through the proper constitutional processes, confident that a fair and impartial review will demonstrate that the accusations are devoid of both factual and legal basis,” Poa said.
