MANILA — World No. 4 Coco Gauff halted Alexandra Eala’s breakthrough campaign at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in emphatic fashion, overpowering the Filipina teen, 6-0, 6-2, in the quarterfinals Thursday night at Center Court in Dubai, UAE.
Gauff stamped her class early and never relented, winning 12 of the match’s 14 games and dominating across the board to seal a clinical straight-sets victory and deny Eala a semifinal berth in one of the biggest tournaments of her young career.
The American piled up 55 total points against Eala’s 33 and converted six of nine break-point opportunities, repeatedly capitalizing in pressure situations while dictating rallies from the baseline.
Eala, in contrast, converted just one of her two break-point chances and struggled mightily on serve, managing to hold just once throughout the match.
Although Eala posted a higher first-serve percentage at 61 percent compared to Gauff’s 55 percent, she won only 32 percent of points on her first delivery and could not translate consistency into control.
Gauff was ruthlessly efficient, capturing 74 percent of her first-serve points and 64 percent on her second serve, underscoring her command of the tempo and her ability to close out points decisively.
The American also dominated the return game, winning 26 receiving points against Eala’s 19 and breaking serve repeatedly to keep the 18-year-old Filipina from finding any rhythm.
At one stretch, Gauff strung together 10 consecutive games, effectively putting the match out of reach before Eala could mount any sustained response.
While Gauff committed eight double faults, the miscues proved inconsequential as she compensated with aggressive returning and steady baseline play. Eala had just one double fault but won only 14 service points compared to Gauff’s 29.
The lopsided result highlighted Gauff’s experience and composure against a rising but still-developing Eala, who was competing in one of the most significant quarterfinal appearances of her career.
Despite the defeat, Eala’s run to the last eight remains a milestone for Philippine tennis, adding to her growing résumé against elite competition on the WTA stage./PN
