MANILA — The House of Representatives’ justice committee on Wednesday ruled that two impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio “sufficient in substance,” allowing the cases to move forward.
The complaints revive efforts to impeach Duterte-Carpio, who was previously impeached by the House last year but saw the case dismissed by the Supreme Court due to procedural issues.
Duterte-Carpio, who recently announced her intention to run in the 2028 presidential election, faces allegations that she misused public funds while in office.
She is also accused of issuing a death threat against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., her former ally, amid their ongoing political rift.
The Vice President has denied the accusations.
Under the Philippine Constitution, an impeachment complaint that advances would eventually lead to a Senate trial.
If convicted, Duterte-Carpio could be removed from office and barred from holding public office, effectively preventing her from seeking the presidency in 2028.
Earlier in the day, Duterte-Carpio said that monitoring the impeachment proceedings against her is not among the main concerns of the Office of the Vice President (OVP).
In a chance interview with reporters, Duterte-Carpio stressed that her office remains focused on its ongoing responsibilities rather than the developments surrounding the impeachment complaints filed against her.
“Marami akong ginagawa na trabaho,” Duterte-Carpio said when asked if she had been closely following the proceedings in the House of Representatives.
“Hindi ‘yan ang prayoridad ngayon ng Office of the Vice President,” she added./PN
