MANILA — Homegrown players from Quezon City’s first district are emerging as key contributors for the Quezon City Black Bulls, who opened the MPBL Season 8 preseason with a solid 4–2 record after six games.
The strong start has been fueled by several players who previously competed in the district’s grassroots leagues, underscoring the growing impact of local talent in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL).
Congressman Juan Carlos “Arjo” Atayde, one of the team’s owners and a known sports supporter, expressed appreciation for the players’ efforts as they represent the city in the regional league.
“We do not expect anything but to compete, and the players showed their competitive nature in this professional level of basketball league. So, amazed and thrilled. We are hoping to find more talents here in our district and city,” Atayde said.
Among those making their presence felt are Pat Buena, Ryan Arceo, Gab Salazar, Kenz Diokno, Joeben Loria, Jaydee Del Rosario, and MJ Joson — all of whom previously competed in the District 1 basketball league.
The Black Bulls’ campaign has been highlighted by a dramatic 80–79 victory over the Bataan Risers, where Joson delivered an all-around performance of 16 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists, and two steals.
Quezon City followed it up with a 70–69 win against the Batangas Tanduay Rum Masters, with Buena leading the scoring with 19 points.
“We came from inter-barangays in Quezon City’s first district, making marks in the MPBL and we are very thankful for the opportunity given by our Cong. Arjo (Atayde),” Buena said.
“We must do whatever it takes to sustain our winning.”
The Black Bulls also registered victories over Sarangani, 78–74, and Bacolod, 77–66, while absorbing losses to Abra Solid North, 88–73, and Biñan Tatak Gel, 74–65.
Beyond basketball, Atayde continues to back various sports initiatives, including volleyball and combat sports, as part of efforts to encourage youth participation in athletics.
“There are many young athletes in Quezon City, not only in basketball, who compete across the country and strive hard. We must help them achieve their dreams of becoming the best in their respective fields,” Atayde added./PN
