ILOILO — With the ongoing Middle East tensions driving fuel prices upward, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Iloilo has intensified province-wide price and supply monitoring to prevent unjustified increases and protect consumers from potential market abuse.
DTI-Iloilo conducted expanded inspections of supermarkets and retail outlets on March 27, tightening oversight as the ripple effects of the global energy crisis threaten household budgets and commodity prices.
The agency stressed that vigilance is critical as economic pressures mount, assuring the public that essential goods remain available and compliant with Suggested Retail Prices (SRP).
“Amid the ongoing situation in the Middle East, DTI provincial offices continue to closely monitor the prices and availability of BNPCs in supermarkets and grocery stores to ensure that retailers adhere with suggested retail prices and that consumers have access to adequate goods,” DTI-6 stated in a public post.
DTI-Iloilo said its intensified monitoring is being carried out in coordination with local government units (LGUs) to expand coverage and ensure tighter control over pricing and supply conditions across the province.
Despite the global volatility, the agency reported that key basic necessities—including canned goods, milk, bread, and bottled water—remain within SRP, providing relief to consumers grappling with rising fuel costs.
To prevent supply disruptions, DTI is also closely reviewing local manufacturing output and supply chains to ensure adequate inventory levels and avoid shortages that could trigger price surges.
The agency urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious pricing or supply irregularities, emphasizing that consumer participation is vital in curbing profiteering.
Alongside enforcement efforts, DTI-Iloilo has launched information campaigns to educate consumers on their rights, proper pricing, and budgeting strategies amid economic strain.
As fuel-driven inflation continues to pose risks, DTI underscored its commitment to stabilizing the market through strict monitoring and coordination with stakeholders, aiming to shield Ilonggo households from further financial pressure./PN
