ILOILO City — Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Clarissa “Claire” Castro will serve as keynote speaker for the 45th anniversary celebration of Panay News tonight, April 18, at the Iloilo Convention Center.
The milestone event marks over four decades of the publication’s role in delivering news and shaping public discourse across Western Visayas, bringing together partners and stakeholders from both public and private sectors.
Castro, a seasoned lawyer, public servant, and media practitioner, is expected to highlight the evolving role of journalism and public communication in governance. She was appointed Palace Press Officer and Undersecretary of the Presidential Communications Office in February 2025 by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
Before joining government, Castro built a career in law after establishing her solo practice in 1994, representing clients from various sectors. She also gained experience in media as a radio commentator, television host, and newspaper columnist, giving her a unique perspective on both public service and communication.
In Panay News’ previous feature for Women’s Month, Castro reflected on the professional challenges she has navigated throughout her career, viewing them as opportunities for growth.
“The challenges I’ve faced in my career are always evolving. There’s a new challenge every day, and I’ve learned to roll with the punches,” she said.
She added: “I look at these challenges as opportunities to improve and become a better public servant, a kinder person, and most importantly a more dedicated follower of Christ. I never let these challenges dictate how I react and who I’m going to be.”

Founded in April 1981 by Daniel “Danny” Gumban Fajardo and wife Maria Santillan Fajardo, Panay News has grown from a local start-up into the leading regional newspaper in the Visayas, known for its coverage of local governance, business, and community stories.
