ILOILO City — Heat index readings across the Visayas have climbed further, with some locations now reaching hazardous levels, as the DOST-PAGASA reported continued extreme heat conditions in its latest monitoring.
Data released at 5 p.m. on April 20 show that most areas in Western, Central, and Eastern Visayas remain within the “extreme caution” bracket of 33°C to 41°C. However, several stations have now recorded heat indices of 42°C and above, placing them under the “danger” category.
In Western Visayas, Iloilo City registered a heat index of 42°C, marking one of the highest readings in the region. Nearby areas such as Dumangas, Iloilo and Roxas City, Capiz sustained elevated levels between 39°C and 41°C. Forecasts indicate that these conditions will persist through April 21 and 22, with little relief expected.
On Negros Island, La Carlota City in Negros Occidental reached up to 41°C, while Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental recorded comparatively lower but still risky levels ranging from 34°C to 36°C. Slight changes are expected in the coming days, but overall heat levels remain high.
In Central Visayas, Cebu and Bohol continue to experience steady heat index readings within the extreme caution range. Mactan, Cebu is projected to stay between 35°C and 37°C, while Panglao, Bohol is expected to hover around 36°C to 37°C.
Eastern Visayas continues to experience fluctuating but concerning conditions. Borongan, Eastern Samar once again hit 42°C, while Guiuan, Eastern Samar and Tacloban City, Leyte recorded values between 39°C and 41°C, nearing dangerous levels.
Compared to earlier reports in recent days, the latest data indicate a gradual intensification of heat across the Visayas, with more areas now approaching or entering the danger classification.
Pagasa warned that extended exposure to such conditions could lead to heat-related illnesses, including heat cramps and heat exhaustion, with the risk of heat stroke increasing significantly at higher levels.
Residents are advised to minimize outdoor exposure during peak daytime hours, drink plenty of water, and wear appropriate clothing. Authorities also urged heightened caution for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with existing health concerns.
The weather bureau attributed the persistent high heat index to prevailing fair weather conditions, which allow temperatures to build up during the day. Monitoring continues as elevated heat levels are expected to remain across the Visayas in the coming days./PN
