ILOILO – The provincial government is strengthening food security and boosting local aquaculture production by distributing thousands of tilapia fingerlings to three local government units (LGUs) and individual fish farmers.
Through the Iloilo Provincial Agriculture Office, a total of 100,000 fingerlings were recently released to Banate (50,000), New Lucena (26,000), and Dingle (12,000), along with 12,000 fingerlings allocated to three farmer-beneficiaries.
The dispersal was carried out at the Integrated Freshwater Aquaculture Park and Technology Center (IFAPTC)-ART Center in Barangay Nanga, Pototan town on April 29.
The initiative aimed at expanding livelihood opportunities while strengthening the province’s fisheries sector.
As of April 30, the Provincial Agriculture Office reported that a total of 473,500 tilapia fingerlings have already been distributed across Iloilo this year, signaling a sustained effort to enhance inland fish production.
“The Iloilo provincial government remains dedicated to working hand-in-hand with our communities to ensure a thriving fisheries sector and secure food systems throughout the province,” the office said.
Officials emphasized that the continued dispersal of fingerlings is expected to improve fish yields, increase farmers’ income, and contribute to long-term food sustainability in Iloilo./PN
