EXACTLY 18 months before — or even earlier than — the filing of certificates of candidacy for the 2028 elections, a political split among Bacolod’s top leaders already seems palpable.
It remains quiet, almost poetic in nature.
While there is still no confirmation from the camps of “dear political friends” — Bacolod Lone District Rep. Albee Benitez and Mayor Greg Gasataya — the body language of their respective supporters and die-hard followers appears to say otherwise.
For the past two elections — 2022 and 2025 — Albee and Greg were formidable political partners.
In 2022, Greg ran for congressman while Albee ran for mayor. In 2025, they switched roles.
Their tandem seemed unshakable. Together, they toppled political heavyweights — Bing Leonardia and El Cid Familiaran.
But their “greatness in oneness” now appears headed toward a sticky end.
AT THE SAME TIME
Let’s parse the situation.
The simultaneous staging of the 66th National PRISAA (Private Schools Athletic Association) Games and Albee’s Sportfest on Saturday, May 9, baffled many Bacolodnons.
PRISAA, a national sporting and cultural event, held its grand opening at Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, while Albee’s Sportfest took place at the UNO-R Amphitheater in Libertad.
Albee was absent during the PRISAA opening, while Greg was a no-show at the congressman’s sports tournament kickoff.
The obvious question arose: Which event carried more importance — PRISAA or Albee’s Sportfest?
Because of this, talk about the supposed Albee-Greg split gained momentum and quickly became the “talk of the town” in Bacolod. Wherever one goes — barbershops, coffee shops, markets, and even media circles — the topic dominates conversations.
‘POLITICAL DIVORCE’
Yes, it may still be premature to presume the worst. But politics has always kept the “City of Smiles” lively.
Historically, Bacolodnons become energized whenever politics dominates the airwaves and fills online platforms and newspaper pages. With Albee and Greg now cast as the main characters, Bacolodnons are naturally beyond excited.
The big question now is this: Is Greg already capable of a “political divorce” from Albee?
One key consideration: Albee is a billionaire.
‘ROOTED’
But Greg is “rooted.” Meaning, the incumbent mayor is known to possess an established political foundation supported by reliable think tanks and grassroots connections.
Logistics-wise, Greg should never be underestimated. Yet one of Greg’s greatest assets is his political charm. More importantly, he is perceived as a hands-on mayor.
Thus, Albee could face a serious headache should he decide to confront Greg head-on in future elections.
Even worse for Albee’s camp if he merely backs one among the incumbent city officials to challenge Greg. That could prove to be an uphill battle.
‘LINE IN THE SAND’
And if Bacolodnons’ collective “gut feeling” eventually proves correct, the next development could be a “line in the sand” moment for incumbent officials allied with either camp. Let’s do some random checking.
How about Vice Mayor Kalaw Puentevella? Is he ripe enough to run for mayor against Greg? The answer may be yes — or maybe no.
What about reelectionist councilors Thaddy Sayson, Caesar Distrito, Celia Flor, Em Ang, Jayson Villarosa, Jun Gamboa, Homer Bais, Dindo Ramos, and Bobby Rojas? Who will side with Albee? Who will side with Greg?
The possible “linyahanay” is undeniably exciting.
‘AT DAGGERS DRAWN’
Well, if Albee and Greg eventually become “at daggers drawn,” it will no longer come as a surprise. Their fate of having “no forever” now feels like marginal notes already written in the margins of a political book.
Thus, the 2028 elections will not only be exciting because of Vice President Sara Duterte and her possible rivals for the presidency, but also because of the brewing local showdown between Albee and Greg.
Albee, being a gaming mogul, is regarded as a “math wizard.” His skill in political computation is considered superb.
Greg, meanwhile, being a media man, is seen as a strategist. He reads minds — and lips.
So, who will prevail?
The next “ganap” could turn poetic at any moment. “Political bombs and rockets” may start dropping as early as next year.
