BACOLOD City — The Negros Occidental provincial government has distributed livestock and poultry projects to farmer groups, local government units, and institutional partners as part of its continuing efforts to strengthen agricultural productivity, food security, and rural livelihoods.
Gov. Eugenio “Bong” Lacson led the ceremonial turnover of 1,546 heads of swine, sheep, and poultry worth P525,000 on May 29 under the province’s various animal productivity and livelihood programs.
The distribution forms part of the Provincial Swine Industry Recovery Initiatives, Animal Genetic Improvement Program, and Livelihood Program being implemented by the Provincial Veterinary Office headed by Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Placeda Lemana.
The farm animals intended for breeding and livelihood support were sourced from the province’s two livestock facilities—the Negros First Ranch in Murcia and the Provincial Livestock Breeding Center and Dairy Farm in La Carlota City.
Recipients included 19 farmers’ associations, three farm schools, several local government units, and the Philippine Army.
Provincial officials said the distribution of breeder weanlings and castrated male hogs for fattening is part of the province’s continuing swine industry recovery and repopulation program aimed at restoring local hog production following previous setbacks in the livestock sector.
The initiative also seeks to strengthen food security while providing beneficiaries with sustainable income-generating opportunities.
Meanwhile, poultry stocks were distributed to civil society organizations and eco-tourism groups engaged in organic farming. The program is expected to help recipients reproduce and expand their poultry resources, providing a sustainable source of food and additional income for their members while promoting environmentally responsible farming practices.
As part of the province’s livestock development efforts, rams or male small ruminants were also provided on a loan basis to institutional stakeholders advocating organic agriculture and integrated farming systems.
The Provincial Veterinary Office said the initiative supports sustainable livestock production and forms part of the province’s preparations for the World Organic Congress 2027.
Participating farms and institutions are being developed as potential tour and learning sites for delegates and participants attending the international event.
Lacson reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to supporting farmers and rural communities through programs that enhance agricultural productivity, create livelihood opportunities, and promote sustainable farming practices across Negros Occidental./PN
