ILOILO City – More than 300 athletes from across the country converged in Iloilo City over the weekend for the Iloilo Duathlon 2.0, highlighting the growing popularity of endurance sports and providing a major boost to the city’s weeklong celebration of the 12th Iloilo Bike Festival 2026.
The June 21 competition drew participants from various regions who took on a demanding course consisting of a 3-kilometer run, a 15-kilometer bike ride, and a final 3-kilometer run, transforming the city’s streets into a showcase of athleticism, fitness, and active mobility.
Athletes competed in the Mountain Bike, Road Bike, Relay, and Fathlete categories, with divisions further classified according to age group and gender. Organizers said the strong turnout reflected the increasing appeal of cycling and multisport events in Iloilo and other parts of the country.
“The participation of more than 300 athletes in this year’s duathlon is a testament to the growing enthusiasm for cycling and fitness in Iloilo,” said Bike Festival Director Wilfredo Sy Jr.
“It is inspiring to see athletes from different backgrounds and age groups come together to challenge themselves and celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship. Events like this help promote not only cycling but also a culture of health and wellness in our communities,” he added.
The duathlon is among the flagship events of the annual Iloilo Bike Festival, which has evolved into one of the country’s largest cycling celebrations since it was launched more than a decade ago. The festival attracts competitive cyclists, recreational riders, fitness advocates, industry stakeholders, and cycling enthusiasts from different parts of the Philippines.
Sy said the festival continues to advance its broader goal of promoting cycling not only as a sport but also as a sustainable mode of transportation and way of life.
“We want to encourage more people to embrace an active lifestyle and experience the benefits of cycling. The overwhelming response to the duathlon shows that more Filipinos are becoming interested in fitness and outdoor activities,” he said.
Participants navigated routes that showcased Iloilo City’s extensive network of bike lanes and cyclist-friendly infrastructure, reinforcing the city’s reputation as one of the country’s leading advocates of active mobility and sustainable transport.
Organizers also cited the city’s cyclist-friendly policies and infrastructure as key factors behind its growing appeal as a venue for major cycling events and sporting competitions.
Now on its 12th year, the Iloilo Bike Festival remains a centerpiece of the city’s campaign to promote healthy living, environmental sustainability, and active transportation. Aside from races and competitions, the festival features cycling exhibitions, community rides, advocacy activities, and industry showcases aimed at strengthening cycling culture in the country.
Organizers expect thousands more participants and visitors to join the festival’s remaining activities, further cementing Iloilo City’s status as one of the Philippines’ premier bike-friendly destinations./PN
