ARTIFICIAL Intelligence (AI) is more than just chatbots, automated workflows or large language models. It’s more than even robotics and data centers.
The technology is a pre-requisite to a wide array of other technologies, including advanced genomics, aerospace, low orbit industries and practically any cyberpunk trope people can think of.
AI may even be used to transform society and government. Whether that is for good or ill is a matter of opinion, however.
The point here is that AI is necessary for transitioning to a new type of society, one that may render the old nation-state model obsolete. No doubt that the old institutions will persist but they will be like newspapers in the age of the internet: antiques.
Once one country starts transforming, others will want to follow, which means more dependence on AI and the people who control it.
In this sense, AI can be considered as a structural bottleneck. Just as we can’t have computers or transportation without energy, countries cannot proceed, on a civilizational and social level, without artificial intelligence. And that transformation means abandoning many of the assumptions and institutions that allow Nation-States to function.
For one thing, mass democracy and human sovereignty will be put into question by AI not only through a radically transformed labor market, but also through structural incentives.
And if you don’t believe me, consider what happened to farming when industrialization happened; or how service and office jobs came to replace much of blue-collar work.
Consider, also, how the industrialization destroyed traditional hierarchies and monarchies and brought about the rise of liberal democracy and mass politics.
Even if we are to assume for a moment that we live in an altruistic world, AI will very likely destroy the nation-state because it will change the structure on which society operates./PN
