MANILA — Kai Sotto has answered Gilas Pilipinas’ call for its crucial FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers against Jordan and Iran, strengthening a national team facing uncertainty in its frontcourt heading into the do-or-die August window.
The 7-foot-3 center has already joined Gilas in practice after taking a break from his club commitments with the Koshigaya Alphas in Japan, giving head coach Tim Cone a major weapon for two games that could significantly affect the Philippines’ bid to reach the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
“We had our first day of practice and it was great especially because Kai joined us in practice and is taking a break from his schedule to play for us in the Window,” Cone said.
“As we have said, it’s a do or die situation and we’re extremely happy that he responded to the call. No doubt, he’s a game-changer for us. I already feel like a better coach with him in the fold,” he added.
Sotto’s availability had been uncertain in the weeks leading up to the qualifying window as the Gilas coaching staff awaited confirmation of his schedule with Koshigaya.
His decision to join the national team becomes even more significant with Gilas dealing with questions surrounding some of its other frontcourt options.
Quentin Millora-Brown is recovering from hernia surgery, while Michael Phillips is unavailable due to a family matter involving his brother.
Sotto’s presence provides Gilas with much-needed size, rim protection and international experience as the Filipinos brace for tough assignments against Jordan and Iran.
Cone said Gilas has only 10 days to prepare for the qualifiers, but the national coach was encouraged by the turnout during the team’s first practice.
“We are still awaiting Justin (Brownlee)’s return from the US, but we expect him shortly. Otherwise, everyone showed up and we got right to work. We have 10 days to prep. We’re all excited,” Cone said.
Brownlee’s expected arrival would further reinforce a Gilas squad entering a critical stage of its World Cup qualifying campaign.
With little margin for error in the August window, Sotto’s return gives the Philippines a formidable presence in the paint and another centerpiece around which Cone can build his game plan against Jordan and Iran./PN
