KALIBO, Aklan – Suspected drug users and pushers who turned themselves in to the police have undergone a “drug education seminar.”
The local police launched “Hinyo Para sa Pagbag-o” in collaboration with the local government, agencies and church leaders.
It was the first of its kind in Aklan, according to Chief Inspector Terence Paul Sta. Ana, municipal police chief.
On Wednesday, Municipal Health Officer Makarius Tel Aviv dela Cruz, Assistant Provincial Prosecutor Flosemer Chris Gonzales and Victory Fellowship pastoral leader Winie Fenete discussed the ill-effects of drugs, prosecution, law enforcement, and spiritual enhancement.
Sta. Ana appealed to the surrenderees to change their ways.
“Some of those we arrested have been warned during Operation Tokhang but continued to sell drugs,” he said. “We will never back down. Drug trafficking should stop.”
Senior Inspector Honey Mae Ruiz, deputy municipal police chief, said they will soon introduce to the surrenderees livelihood and training skills.
Some 426 suspected users and pushers have surrendered to the police and local officials since July 1, when the Philippine National Police launched an intensified antidrug campaign dubbed Oplan Double Barrel.
Of the surrenderees, 6 percent were women. The youngest was 16 while the oldest was 62.
Of the 16 villages here, only Barangay Briones had no drug surrenderee, municipal police data showed. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
