BACOLOD City – What made Mayor Evelio Leonardia transfer to Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban)?
He wants to champion federalism, the mayor has disclosed.
“We have to cooperate with the administration,” said Leonardia. When you become a member of PDP-Laban, “it means you are an advocate of federalism.”
President Rodrigo Duterte, the party’s leader, is an advocate of federalism.
Even when he was still mayor of Davao City, he made rounds across the country to speak at forums to spread his advocacy.
According to Leonardia, the push for the federal form of government has become “overwhelming.”
“The movement is really accelerating. It’s snowballing. This is a way to really spread development. We cannot always be dependent on the Imperial capital,” he said, referring to Manila.
Leonardia believes federalism will result in faster development in the provinces, and the Philippines has “the leadership and the resources” to make that happen.
The mayor said Giorgidi Aggabao and Faustino Dy Jr., president and chairman, respectively, of the Nationalist People’s Coalition, gave him “permission and blessing” to transfer to the ruling party.
Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran (his 2016 election running mate), eight allied city councilors and City Administrator John Orola also took their oath as new PDP-Laban members on Sept. 30./PN
