MANILA – The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Monday warned the public that new typhoon “Lawin” will be “much stronger” than typhoon “Karen.”
“It started way outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), meaning that it will have sufficient time and distance to intensify,” NDRRMC executive director Ricardo Jalad told Malacañang reporters.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, “Lawin” will enter the PAR on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
It is expected to “largely” affect the country on Thursday,” Jalad said.
The NDRRMC said the typhoon’s track will be “higher” than “Karen’s” and will possibly affect Northern Luzon.
“I think the coverage of typhoon ‘Lawin’ is a bit larger, bigger than (that of) typhoon [‘Karen’s’] so we expect a larger coverage of area to have rainfall,” Jalad said.
“We will exert all our best effort to anticipate the damages and make the necessary preparation and measures,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jalad said “Karen” left three individuals dead and five others missing.
The reported deaths and disappearances are being validated, he said, “to make sure on the cause of death and their being declared missing.”
As of 6 a.m., Oct. 17, “Karen” caused a total of P572,840,513 million in agricultural damages in Regions 5 and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
A total of P2,223,067 worth of relief assistance has been provided to affected families./PN
