MANILA – Aiming to bring back the winning tradition of the Gilas Pilipinas, Vincent “Chot” Reyes has been re-appointed as the head coach of the national men’s basketball team.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Renault Barrios announced the return of Reyes during Tuesday’s SBP meeting in Bonifacio Global City. Tab Baldwin, meanwhile, will serve as his consultant.
“We want to go back to our winning formula that is why we brought back coach Chot to Gilas. Mr. Baldwin, however, will still be a consultant to the team,” Barrios told the media.
Reyes, a many-time PBA champion coach, admitted that it was not easy for him to decide his return to the national men’s basketball team after earlier announcing his retirement from coaching.
“Coach Tab has been informed (on Monday) night that he slides up to the consultant position and the SBP have asked me to take over the job as head coach again,” Reyes said.
“But in the end, it’s not an overnight decision. They’ve been talking to me about this for more than a month already. In the end, mahirap talaga talikuran ang iyong bansa. I think that’s the challenge that’s given to all of us here,” he added.
This will be Reyes’ third time to handle the national men’s basketball team, previously appointed in 2007 and in 2013, when he led the Gilas to its first-ever FIBA World Cup stint in Spain.
The national men’s basketball team also achieved its first FIBA World Cup win after 40 years under Reyes in 2014. He resigned later that year after Gilas finished seventh in the Asian Games./PN
