MANILA – The Bureau of Customs Transformers survived a tough challenge from the Philippine Air Force Jet Spikers for a 23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 win in the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Reinforced Conference on Saturday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Thai reinforcement Kanjana Kuthaisong led the way with 21 points for the Transformers, which moved up to solo third place in the standings with a 5-2 win-loss slate.
Alyssa Valdez chipped in 15 markers, while Lilet Mabbayad and Rosemarie Vargas combined 20 points for the Transformers, which is one of the four semifinals-bound teams.
After dropping the opening set, the Transformers encountered a tough challenge from the Jet Spikers in the second frame with the score tied at 20-all. Valdez and Kuthaisong then connived for five straight points to level the count at 1-1.
Both teams were knotted in a see-saw battle in the third frame with the Jet Spikers holding on to a 23-21 lead. Three straight hits by Kuthaisong gave the Transformers a 24-23 edge before Pauline Soriano closed the set with a block.
From another tight encounter in the fourth set, the Transformers turned an 11-all deadlock to a 21-16 lead behind Valdez and Kuthaisong. The Jet Spikers came to within 21-19 but errors from them allowed the Transformers to clinch the win.
“Medyo maganda rin na nabigyan kami ng challenge ngayon (against the Jet Spikers) kasi kailangan namin iangat ang laro namin ngayon papasok na sa semifinals,” said Transformers head coach Sherwin Meneses.
Joy Cases and May Ann Pantino finished with 12 points apiece while Negrense Dell Palomata and Judy Anne Caballejo had 10 points each for the Jet Spikers, which ended its campaign with a 2-5 slate./PN
