MANILA – The College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers bucked a slow start to score a 17-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-17 win over the University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas at the start of the NCAA Season 92 women’s seniors’ volleyball tournament at the San Juan Arena.
Ranya Musa led the way with 15 points while Season 91 Finals MVP Jeanette Panaga added 14 markers for the defending champions Lady Blazers, which is aiming for its second straight tiara.
“It will be a tougher campaign for us this year because all of the teams are now looking to beat us,” said Lady Blazers head coach Michael Cariño. “But we will prepare for our games.”
Just like the Lady Blazers, last year’s runner-up the San Sebastian College Lady Stags also recovered from a slow start to score a 23-25,26-28, 25-19, 25-18, 15-12 win over the Arellano University Lady Chiefs.
Reigning two-time NCAA MVP Gretchel Soltones top-scored with 25points, including 24 attacks, while Joyce Sta. Rita and Denice Lim chipped in 15 markers apiece for the Lady Stags.
“This is my last season and I will give it my best to help us win a championship,” said Soltones, who is aiming to end two straight years of bridesmaid finishes in the tournament.
In other results, the Lyceum Lady Pirates edged the Letran Lady Knights, 21-25,25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 15-10, as the Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers edged the Mapua Lady Cardinals, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-8, to grab their shares of the lead./PN
