MANILA – The College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers recovered from a third set defeat to beat the Mapua Lady Cardinals, 25-10, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, in the NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball tournament at the San Juan Arena.
Jeanette Panaga fired a match-best 18 points, including 13 attacks, to lead the way for the defending champion Lady Blazers, which moved up to solo first place with a 3-0 win-loss slate.
The Lady Blazers immediately made its presence felt in the opening frame to build a double digit lead behind Panaga and Ranya Musa. Errors by the Lady Cardinals allowed the Lady Blazers to close the set easily.
Unlike in the opening set, the Lady Cardinals showed a good fight in the second frame as it hanged on, threatening the Lady Blazers’ slim lead. But multiple errors by the Lady Cardinals down the stretch allowed the Lady Blazers to build a 2-0 set advantage.
After faltering in the third set, the Lady Blazers regained its touch in the fourth frame to build an early lead. The Lady Cardinals tried to keep the match close but conversions by Panaga late in the set sealed the win for the Lady Blazers.
“Mahabang proseso pa naman ‘yan. Sabi ko nga sa kanila, unti-untiin natin mga laban. Sa mga ganitong laban nakikita namin ‘yung problema para maayos sa susunod na games,” said Lady Blazers head coach Michael Cariño.
Angeline Mangundayao finished with 11 points, including 10 attacks, to lead the way for the Lady Cardinals, which suffered its second straight defeat to slide down to a 0-2 win-loss slate.
In the other match, the Arellano University Lady Chiefs barged into the win-column following a 25-14, 25-11, 25-19 victory over the Emilio Aguinaldo College Lady Generals./PN
