MANILA – Milan Melindo will have another shot at a world title as he faces International Boxing Federation light flyweight champion Akira Yaegashi of Japan next year.
ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer said the Melindo-Yaegashi clash is close to reality following the Filipino boxer’s unanimous decision win over Thai Fahlan Sakkreerin Jr. on Saturday.
“There are no more tune-up fights for Milan. He will fight Yaegashi next,” Aldeguer told Panay News. “ALA Promotions will negotiate with the Japanese’s camp for a chance to have the fight staged in Cebu.”
Aldeguer also revealed he had negotiations with Japanese promoter Joe Koisumi, who wants the Melindo-Yaegashi bout on New Year’s Eve in Tokyo.
“They want the fight to happen before the year ends, but I told them that would be impractical since Melindo just came from a fight on Saturday and he will not have enough time to prepare for a world-title bout,” he said.
The Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental native defeated Sakkeerin at the Cebu City Coliseum.
It will be the 28-year-old Melindo’s third shot at a world championship after failing in his first two attempts against the Mexicans Juan Francisco Estrada and Javier Mendoza./PN
