BACOLOD City – Mayor Neil Lizares III of Talisay City, Negros Occidental is leading in the manual recount of votes cast during the May elections, according to the city administrator.
Lizares’ counsel for the recount — former Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal — informed the mayor’s camp votes in 12 ballot boxes have been recounted, said Jose Jonathan Ealdama.
“Votes for the other party increased by 20, but ours also increased by 30, so we are still leading,” Ealdama said.
Results may be known by Wednesday, Dec. 7, the city administrator said.
“After recounting 20 ballot boxes, Comelec can decide whether to continue or dismiss the recount petition,” said Ealdama.
He claimed the petitioner — defeated mayoral candidate Sheila Saratan — needs at least 71 votes per ballot, “but as of now they have only 3.25 votes.”
For his part, Lizares said, “We believe the [vote-counting] machines are 99-percent accurate.”
Saratan is the wife of former Talisay City mayor Eric.
She got 21,119 votes, while Lizares garnered 28,440./PN
