MANILA – The adoption of federalism in the Philippines will lead to economic development, according to President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte.
During the 7th anniversary of the Federalismo Alyansa ng Bicol in Legaspi City recently, Duterte said that open economies spur competition.
The chief executive lamented that the country is ruled only by a few.
“The essence of the blossoming of the economy is actually competition, and major trade and services must be freed from the control of only few families,” the President said.
But, Duterte clarified that he is against selling lands to foreigners.
He also said that election violence is worsening in the country because the feudal political system remains.
Federalism will also benefit regions that are rich in natural resources, Duterte said.
At present, local governments, he said, have no say in the management and use of power derived from area.
“This is because of the current unitary government setup. Regional government will have more power over its resources under a federal form of government.”
Duterte said that peace and development in Mindanao can only be achieved through federalism.
“Without federalism, the country may lose Mindanao as Muslims push for self-determination. The next generation will face tremendous challenge in keeping the country intact and there could be continued fighting as a result of Muslim secessionist initiative,” Duterte ended./PN
