ILOILO City – Ending a five-year dry spell on Thursday, the Central Philippine University (CPU) Golden Lions mens’ college spikers scored a 2-1 victory against the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU) squad to complete a stunning sweep of the 2016 Iloilo Private Schools Athletics Association’s (ILOPRISAA) football events at the CPU Big Field.
The Golden Lions claimed an early upper hand against JBLFMU, thwarting all their attempts for a 1-0 tally at halftime. JBLFMU promptly retaliated for a 1-1 deadlock in the second half, before the Golden Lions netted another ball and kept their defense strong to claim the championship, 2-1.
Earlier in the week, the CPU High School football team mounted a 4-2 victory against Ateneo de Iloilo to take home the secondary level crown.
The Golden Lions high school squad was at a 1-2 disadvantage entering halftime. However, refusing to hand over the title, the young Centralian spikers found their footing later in the second half to hold Ateneo scoreless and accomplish a three-point shooting spree, ending the match 4-2.
CPU also claimed the high school futsal and elementary football crowns to accomplish the rare ILOPRISAA sweep.
The winning teams are set to represent Iloilo in the upcoming Regional PRISAA in Antique./PN
