MANILA – The College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers vented its ire on the Emilio Aguinaldo College Lady Generals to score a 25-10, 18-25, 25-7, 25-23 win in the NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball tournament on Monday at the San Juan Arena.
Jeanette Panaga led the way with 22 points, including 15 attacks, six blocks and a service ace, for the Lady Blazers, which kept its hold on the second spot with a 5-1 win-loss slate.
Jan Arianne Daguil added 13 markers, while Rachel Austero contributed 10 points for the defending champion Lady Blazers, which bounced back from a 25-22, 24-26, 25-18, 22-20, 15-10 loss to the Lyceum Lady Pirates.
The Lady Blazers went on a strong start in the opening set behind Panaga and Daguil for a lopsided win. But the Lady Generals’ were able to pull one back in the second frame with its tenacious defense.
The Lady Blazers, however, regained its form in the third frame as it took advantage of the Lady Generals poor reception for a double-digit edge before closing it out with three straight aces by Janella Sulit.
Both teams had a tight exchange in the fourth set with the Lady Blazers hanging on to a slim lead until a huge finishing run courtesy of Panaga to finally close the match.
“Medyo nag-lie low kami kaya nakuhanan kami ng set,” Panaga said. “We will use the Christmas break to prepare for our remaining matches next year. Ang target muna namin ay makapasok sa semis.”
Ladeisheen Magbanua was the lone bright spot with 16 markers for the Lady Generals, which suffered its sixth consecutive defeat in as many outings to remain at last place in the 10-team field./PN
