MANILA – The San Sebastian College Lady Stags survived a tough challenge from the Letran Lady Knights, 28-26, 25-14, 24-26, 24-26, 15-7, to stay perfect in the NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball on Monday at the San Juan Arena.
Reigning MVP awardee Gretchel Soltones and Joyce Sta. Rita led the way with 15 points apiece for the Lady Stags, which remained on top of the standings with a 6-0 win-loss record.
Nikka Mariel Dalisay and Dangie Encarnacion chipped in 12 points each, while Bacolod-native Katherine Villegas had 11 hits for the Lady Stags, which moved closer to an outright finals seat.
Despite the win, Lady Stags returning head coach Roger Gorayeb did not hide his disappointment for his wards after being stretched to five sets by the cellar-dwelling Lady Knights.
“It’s a simple case of overconfidence that it almost cost us the game,” said Gorayeb. “This is a single-round robin elimination and all the games here matter. Every game is a championship game.”
It was another heartbreaker for the Lady Knights after suffering its third straight five-set defeat after previously losing to the Lyceum Lady Pirates, 21-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 15-10, and the Lady Blazers, 27-25, 25-23, 22-25, 7-25, 12-15.
In the other match, the Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers clinched a straight set win over the Emilio Aguinaldo College Lady Generals, 25-14, 25-16, 26-24. Shola Alvarez led the way with 17 points for the Lady Bombers./PN
