MANILA – Despite an unblemished record in the ongoing NCAA Season 92 women’s volleyball tournament, San Sebastian College Lady Stags coach Roger Gorayeb is still not satisfied with the performance of his key player Gretchel Soltones.
In a statement, the many-time champion coach said he believes that the reigning two-time NCAA MVP awardee can still improve her performance as they move closer to the playoffs round.
“I did my part, it will really be up to her (Soltones),” said Gorayeb, who kept his players busy during the holidays to maintain their game shape. “There was some concern about her conditioning.”
Soltones has been far from peak form and is currently just second in the league’s best scoring tally as she averaged just 16.17 points a game, a shade behind last year’s Finals MVP and College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers’ Jeanette Panaga’s 17 hits.
The Lady Stags are three games away from sweeping their way to the NCAA women’s volleyball finals but they have yet to face the tougher teams as the league resumes on Jan. 4.
The Lady Stags has emerged as the only unbeaten team after winning their first six outings and could advance straight to the best-of-three championship round if they can hurdle their last three assignments.
The Lady Stags’ last three games will be against Final Four contenders University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas (3-2) on Jan. 13, the Lyceum Lady Pirates (4-1) on Jan. 23 and defending champion Lady Stags (5-1) on Jan. 25.
“Yes we want to sweep, who wouldn’t want that?” said Gorayeb. “But I want my team to improve on many aspects. Hard to think of a sweep early because we know our last three games are all strong teams.”/PN
