MANILA – San Miguel Beermen center June Mar Fajardo has a wide lead this early for the Best Player of the Conference (BPC) honors in the ongoing 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup.
In data released by the PBA, the reigning three-time PBA MVP leads the BPC race with 44.2 statistical points (SPs), boasting 20.2 points, 17.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 blocks averages per game.
GlobalPort Batang Pier’s Terrence Romeo is at a distant second with his 37.5 SPs with league-leading 27.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.5 steals averages per game.
Following Fajardo and Romeo are Beermen’s Alex Cabagnot with 34.6 SPs, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings’ Japeth Aguilar with 33.2 SPs and Blackwater Elite rookie Rey Mark Belo with 33.0 SPs.
Completing the top 10 are Beermen’s Arwind Santos (31.3), Alaska Aces’ Calvin Abueva (31), TNT Katropa’s Jayson Castro (30.3), Phoenix Fuel Masters’ Matthew Wright (30.2), and Meralco Bolts’ Chris Newsome (29.8).
According to the PBA, statistical points make up 40 percent of the criteria for the Best Player of the Conference award. The remaining 60 percent is based on media votes, players votes and PBA Commissioner’s Office’s votes.
Meanwhile, Belo and Wright are number 1 and 2 in the race for the top performing rookies. They are followed by Star Hotshots’ Jiovani Jalalon (24.0), Aces’ Carl Bryan Cruz (19.2) and Fuel Masters’ Angelo Alolino (16.9).
The PBA will resume action on Jan. 6 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City with the Batang Pier battling the Bolts in the first game at 4:15 p.m. followed by the Beermen versus Elite match at 7 p.m./PN
