KALIBO, Aklan – Bishop Jose Corazon Tala-oc reminded parishioners and devotees to humble themselves like little children.
“Jesus Christ encouraged us in his public ministry to be childlike, be lowly, be little, be simple and be humble,” Tala-oc said in his homily during the Pilgrims’ Mass at the Parish of St. John the Baptist Cathedral on Sunday.
The mass capped the religious activities of the Ati-Atihan Festival, whose highlights — including the Sadsad street-dancing contest — were held over the weekend.
Tala-oc celebrated the 7 a.m. mass after the Señor Santo Niño de Kalibo image was transferred from its shrine to a makeshift altar at the cathedral’s front yard.
Thousands of devotees, visitors, balikbayans, and revelers occupied portions of Martelino and Archbishop Reyes streets and the Pastrana Park for the high mass.
Calling the Feast of Señor Santo Niño “special,” Tala-oc noted that the Philippines is “well-known for [its] people’s strong and deep devotion to the Child Jesus.”
“The Holy See granted us the special permission to celebrate the Feast of Santo Niño every third Sunday of January,” he said.
“Greatness lies in humility and not in grasping prestige and authority. … To be like child is to accept that one is in need of God and the help of fellow human beings,” Tala-oc said, adding that Jesus “became a Child and later a grownup in public ministry so that disciples are called in His way of childlike humility.”
This year, the prelate said the Philippine Church dedicates its life to the parish as a communion of communities.
According to the prelate, the devotion to and celebration of the Santo Niño is always “part and central” of every parish.
“Everyone has a chance to be great in the Kingdom of God,” Tala-oc said, urging devotees to “keep the faith [in] Señor Santo Niño in the middle of the deafening sounds of drums.” (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
