MANILA – The TNT Katropa struggled early on before pulling away to a 104-92 win over the Mahindra Floodbuster in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
Jeth Troy Rosario led the way with 18 points and nine rebounds for the Katropa, which snapped its two-game losing skid to improve to a 5-4 win-loss slate tying the Blackwater Elite.
Roger Pogoy chipped in a career-high 16 markers, while Moala Tautuaa, Kris Rosales and Larry Fonacier had 14, 11 and 11 points, respectively, for the Katropa, which is aiming for the second twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals.
Trailing 57-51 at halftime, the Katropa started strong in the third frame on six straight points by Rosario to tie the score at 59-all. The game became tight from there until the Katropa built a 78-71 lead on hits by Tautuaa and Fonacier.
The Floodbuster came to within 79-78 early in the final frame but the Katropa pulled away anew on back-to-back three-pointers by Rosario. The Floodbuster came close to 88-87 after a triple by Mark Yee.
But the Katropa went on a 10-1 scoring run on triples by Ryan Reyes and Fonacier for a 100-90 advantage with under a minute left in the game. Another basket by Fonacier followed by a dunk by Rosario sealed Katropa’s win.
Alex Mallari finished with 19 points, while Yee and Philip Paniamogan added 10 markers apiece for the Floodbuster, whose two-game winning run was snapped with the defeat.
The Floodbuster fell down to last place in the standings with a 2-7 win-loss record tying the Meralco Bolts, already out of contention for the playoffs race./PN
