ILOILO City – Tribu Salognon of Jaro National High School is the Dinagyang Festival overall champion for the second straight year.
By successfully defending the crown it won last year, Salognon proved its 2016 victory was no fluke.
Critics viewed last year’s win of Salognon as a stroke of luck due mainly to rival Tribu Panayanon’s violation of a contest rule – its riser (a theater platform that provides varying levels to make a show more visually interesting) exceeded the dimensions that the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc. (IDFI) set in the criteria for the ati-ati tribes competition.
Yesterday, Salognon silenced critics with its well-choreographed dance-drama of the classic fable Ang Amo kag ang Bao (The Monkey and the Turtle) – the story tells how a poor turtle was cheated by a selfish monkey. This got the nod of the judges and reaped thunderous applauses from spectators in five judging areas.
According to choreographer Errol Jave Villalobos, Salognon’s winning formula was simple – dedication, hard work and devotion to the Santo Niño.
“We’re very happy. We thank all our supporters and all who prayed for Tribu Salognon,” said Villalobos.
Salognon also copped a slew of special and minor awards.
The 2015 Dinagyang champion that Salognon dethroned last year, Tribu Panayanon of Iloilo City National High School, settled for a first runner-up finish this 2017. But its choreographer Romel Flogen was declared the best among his Dinagyang peers.
In the “battle of festival champions” or Kasadyahan cultural contest, Hubon Binagtong sa Manggahan of Guimaras dethroned last year’s champion, Hubon Tatusan of Caluya Antique.
Tribu Binagtong sa Manggahan of Guimaras was choreographed by Lonelle Robles Carado, Luigi and Maly Ramos.
Before he announced the winners last night at the Freedom Grandstand, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog disclosed that this year’s Dinagyang ati-ati tribe champion will participate in the 2017 Aliwan Festival in Manila.
The champion will also perform at the Philippine Independence Day Celebration in Sydney, Australia in June and at an event in New Zealand in November.
Mabilog also announced the suspension of class in the city in all levels to give students and teachers time to rest after several months of grueling preparations for this year’s edition of Dinagyang.
The second runner-up in the ati-ati tribes competition was Tribu Ilonganon of Jalandoni Memorial National High School.
Third runner-up was Tribu Paghidaet of La Paz National High School while the fourth runner-up was Tribu Pan-ay of Fort San Pedro National High School
All the runners-up were past Dinagyang champions.
According to Salognon tribe manager and Jaro National High School principal Belinda Dinopol, their preparation for this year’s Dinagyang Festival was extremely hectic due to many school activities and holidays.
“We started scouting for members October last year. Some of our previous members already graduated,” said Dinopol.
Salognon practiced from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. every day.
“Our edge is our choreographer. He’s very good. He does research…indi lang basta kung ano lang gina-isip ya,” said Dinopol.
Salognon had a total of 500 members – 50 boy warriors, 30 girl dancers, 30 special dancers, 90 drummers, 150 propsmen and 150 support staff.
