MANILA – Alyssa Valdez, Dindin Santiago-Manabat and Jaja Santiago will lead the hopefuls aiming to earn a slot for the National Volleyball team set to compete in the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games this August in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Valdez, who is currently in Thailand, and the Santiago sisters have all been required to participate in the tryouts of national team head coach Francis Vicente to be held in Manila, Cebu and Davao.
Also reportedly to show up in the tryouts are Rachel Anne Daquis, Myla Pablo, Elaine Kasilag, Lourdes Clemente, Kim Fajardo, Denise Lazaro, Aby Maraño, Shiela Pineda, Ara Galang, Faith Arado, Roselle Baliton, and Shaya Adorador.
“I’m deeply overwhelmed with the response from these players. It’s just shows how eager they are in bringing the country back to its lofty position in the international stage,” Vicente said.
“Although I am thankful for the support, the slot in the team is just limited. They have to undergo the selection process and prove that they deserve a spot. Equal opportunity treatment means equal opportunity to all players,” he added.
Vicente, who currently coaches Generika Life Savers in Philippine Superliga and the University of the East Lady Warriors in UAAP, said that the tryouts is for him to determine who really wants the opportunity more.
“Gusto ko ibalik ang dating sistema na halos magpatayan ang mga players para sa iilang slots sa national team,” said Vicente. “Gusto ko makita silang magutom kasi dun natin mapapatunayan na handa silang gawin lahat para sa bansa natin.”
The country participated in the SEA Games for the first time in a decade in 2015, but the team led by Maraño, Daquis, Santiago, Valdez, and Jovelyn Gonzaga failed to take a medal./PN
