ILOILO City – Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has gathered recommendations on how to improve future Dinagyang celebrations.
Among those he was seriously considering have something to do with waste management and event organizing.
Ambulant vendors may be regulated. It has been observed that they dispose of their garbage just anywhere, said Mabilog.
“I-check naton ining mga bolantero kay wala sila may ginatiniran diri,” he said. “Kon kis-a ang ila mga waste kon diin lang nila gina-dispose.”
Vendors and kiosk owners may be required to collect their garbage, bring these with them and dispose these where appropriate. Mabilog called the proposal “Basura Ko, Ipauli Ko.”
Huge privately organized events, including fundraisers, may be required to give a share of their income to the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc. or the city government.
“Nalipay kita bangod madamo nga MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) during Dinagyang kag ang ila kità makabulig gid sa ila pamilya,” said Mabilog.
“Pero may mga big events, nagapa-ticket sila, nagakuha lang sila permit, pero ang ila revenue, wala sila naga-share sa Dinagyang Foundation or city government,” he noted.
Mabilog said there was also a proposal to hold a one-day IP (indigenous people) Day.
“Butangan ta isa ka adlaw para gid sa ila para ma-present nila ang ila culture,” he said. “Basi makabulig para ma-improve ang ila pagpangabuhi.”
City hall, in partnership with nongovernment organizations, helps natives residing at the Ati Village in Barangay Lanit, Jaro district.
“Dinagyang is all about them (indigenous people),” said Mabilog. “Aside from giving honor sa aton nga Ginuo paagi kay Señor Santo Niño, dapat may ara man activity para sa ila.”
Meanwhile Mabilog considers providing the local press covering the highlights high-speed internet connection.
For the first time, mobile phone signals were jammed during the Kasadyahan cultural competition on Saturday and the ati-ati tribes competition on Sunday — the main events of the Dinagyang — for security purposes.
While the City Tourism Office provided a Wi-Fi signal, access to it had been limited.
Making Dinagyang better is a challenge to local stakeholders, Mabilog said./PN
