SAN JOSE, Antique – With the contentious competition of the 2017 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet officially kicking off on Monday, the Iloilo delegation has claimed a loose hold on the top spot of the standings with eight amassed medals in total, as of 1 p.m. on Feb. 7.
Iloilo has claimed two gold medals in the Secondary Level as Jenny Medina dominated the girls’ shot put event and Reuben David Supeña outclassed the competition in the boys’ archery showdown.
Meanwhile, Rhealyn Decosta claimed Iloilo’s first gold medal in the Elementary Level with the championship in the girls’ shot put tourney.
Iloilo has also bagged five bronze medals, with 2nd runner-up finishes in Secondary girls’ shot put, Secondary boys’ archery (30-meter distance), Secondary girls’ archery (30-meter distance), Secondary girls’ archery (40-meter distance), and a lone bronze in the Elementary level.
This year’s WVRAA host Antique follows behind Iloilo in the partial medal tally with six medals in total (2 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze) all in the Secondary Level.
However, in the Demo Sports category – where events such as Pencak Silat, Dance Sports and Aero Gymnastics are being competed in for the first time – Aklan leads with eight medals (5 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze) as Iloilo trails behind with three gold, three silver and 2 bronze plums.
Capiz has three silver and five bronze awards in the demonstration events, while Antique has two bronze.
Meanwhile, in the Secondary level football tournament Iloilo roasted Aklan, 4-1, with early hits by Barotac Nuevo National Comprehensive High School pride Jan Bernard Delariarte and St. Paul’s High School’s Prince Michael Panes. A 75th-minute netter by Jarlson Roy Derutas sealed Iloilo’s dominant win.
In other events, Sta. Clarita International School-enforced Iloilo embarrassed Antique with an 81-22 massacre in the Secondary boys’ basketball event. Their lady counterparts pulled off a similar thrashing, limiting Antique to just 36 as they surged ahead at 98 at the end of their match./PN
