ROXAS City – Evacuation centers will be built in three coastal villages of Capiz province.

Next month, a two-storey evacuation center will be turned over to Barangay Manapao, Pontevedra town.

The center cost P10 million, according to Francis Megoc, disaster risk reduction program manager of HEKS Swiss Church Aid.

HEKS Swiss Church Aid is an international organization that has been helping the people of Capiz after super typhoon “Yolanda” struck in November 2013.

The two other evacuation centers will be turned over to Barangay Bantigue in Panay town and Barangay Binaobawan in Pilar this April.

A series of trainings will be conducted for residents, barangay officials, faculty and staff of schools in the three barangays to enhance their capability in the management, maintenance and operation of the evacuation centers.

Pilar’s Mayor Gideon Ike Patricio said the evacuation center will serve as temporary shelter of those that whatever disaster will displace.

Patricio likewise conveyed his appreciation to the people of Switzerland for choosing the town as one of the recipients of the project.

“Yolanda” (international name: Haiyan) was one of the most intense tropical cyclones on record. It devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, on Nov. 8, 2013.

“Yolanda” was the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, killing at least 6,300 people. It was also the strongest storm recorded at landfall. (PIA-Capiz/PN)
