MANILA – President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte on Sunday pledged P2 billion worth of aid to the survivors of a lethal earthquake in Surigao del Norte.

Duterte made the announcement in a speech before residents of Surigao City, one of the worst-hit areas of the magnitude 6.7 tremor.

The President said the distribution of relief aid in the poverty-stricken province encountered slight delays due to difficulties in getting aircraft as well as damaged infrastructure, particularly Surigao City airport’s runway.

The President, after his speech, led the distribution of drinking water and food packs, and met with local officials.

The magnitude 6.7 earthquake that rocked the city on Friday left 6 residents dead and over 100 others injured.

Power and water services remained down in parts of Surigao City and outlying towns on Sunday.

Over 100 aftershocks, including a magnitude 4.9 tremor, have rocked Surigao City on the heels of Friday’s earthquake, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). (ABS-CBN News)
