MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) deployed a team to the island of Boracay in Aklan province to search for Quezon City road rage suspect Fredison Ong Atienza.
Hotels and resorts were being checked.
With two unlicensed firearms, Atienza is considered armed and dangerous.
A high-stakes poker player, he was tagged in the shooting of Anthony Mendoza after an altercation at the intersection of Quezon and D. Tuazon avenues in Quezon City on Feb. 25.
The incident was witnessed by the victim’s brother Michael Mendoza who was just behind them.
Quezon City Police District director Chief Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar earlier said Atienza sent surrender feelers and was supposed to return on Wednesday last week.
“Tayo ay naniniwalang nandoon pa si (Atienza) sa Boracay. Nakikipag-ugnayan na tayo sa pulis doon,” Eleazar said. “We consider him armed and dangerous due to his two firearms including yung ginamit niya dun sa victim.”
Senior Inspector Jose Mark Anthony Gesulga, deputy chief of the Boracay Tourist Assistance Center (BTAC), confirmed that the Quezon City Police District contacted them after Atienza was allegedly spotted in Boracay following the murder.
“Our intelligence monitoring will continue until Atienza surfaces,” stressed Gesulga, adding police personnel in both the ports of Caticlan and Cagban have already been alerted.
On the order of Justice secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II, the Bureau of Immigration also placed Atienza on lookout bulletin to prevent him from going out of the country.
Gesulga said they already coordinated with the local Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines office.
He likewise urged the Boracay community to report any information on the suspect.
In a memorandum dated March 1, Justice secretary Aguirre ordered Immigration commissioner Jaime Morente to instruct all immigration officers in the country’s airports and seaports to be on the lookout for Atienza.
The Justice secretary warned immigration officers not to wait until boarding time of the subject individual to inform his office or the prosecutor general of any attempt to leave the country.
“Take all other appropriate actions including, but not limited to, coordinating with other concerned offices and agencies and even airlines, especially since international passengers are customarily required to check-in within a specified number of hours before the flight,” he added.
An immigration lookout bulleting order (ILBO) is different from a court-issued hold departure order since the former only directs the Bureau of Immigration to be on the lookout for the subject and to verify the status of a case against the subject person and not to restrict an individual from leaving the country.
But a person subject to the ILBO should seek an allow departure order from the DOJ secretary himself to be allowed to leave./PN
