SAN JOSE, Antique – Gov. Rhodora J. Cadiao thanked Sen. Loren B. Legarda for the P125-million budget for the revival of the Evelio B. Javier Airport in this capital town.
Legarda, Senate finance committee chairwoman, pushed for the allocation in the 2017 General Appropriations Act.
The amount will be used for, among others, the expansion of the airport’s waiting and departure areas, the governor told the press on Tuesday.
Cadiao, herself a former flight attendant, had long been pushing for the reopening of the airport named after a local hero, saying it could further boost the province’s economy and tourism.
She ruled out reopening the airport in time for the Palarong Pambansa from April 23 to 29, citing time constraints.
“Commercial flights might come in within the year or next year,” she said.
But Cadiao said the airport will be used for the expected arrival of President Rodrigo R. Duterte during the Palaro opening.
The Evelio B. Javier Airport was closed a few years ago after the airline Asian Spirit ceased its operations due to lack of passengers. (PNA)
