BACOLOD City – A sedan crashed into a passenger tricycle on Burgos Road Extension in Barangay Granada.
Three people died while four others were injured. All were on board the tricycle.
Police identified the fatalities as couple Jochel Demapula, 26, and Roy Silballero, both of Barangay Granada, and tricycle driver Joseph Lumangyao, 37, of Barangay Vista Alegre.
Injured were Elmer dela Torre, James Siason, Andrian Mandawe, and Stephen Basoy, all residents of Granada.
The crash happened around 12:40 a.m. on Saturday, March 11.
Demapula died on the spot, while Silballero and Lumangyao perished at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital hours after the incident.
All those injured were declared outpatients, said Chief Inspector Sherlock Gabana, Police Station 5 commander.
Sedan driver Renz John Gabitanan, 19, also of Granada, was detained in the Police Station 5 lockup cell. He may face a charge of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and multiple injuries.
The tricycle was heading to Granada from the Burgos Market when it slowed down to unload a passenger, but the sedan — owned by Gabitanan’s father Abner — crashed into its rear, police investigation showed.
As of this writing, Gabana said they were still waiting for the victims’ families to file charges against Gabitanan.
Police will wait until 8 a.m. today (March 13); without the charges, they will have to release the sedan driver, said Gabana./PN
