MANILA – Abanse Negrense B pulled off a stunner to clinch the crown in women’s division of Mayor Raymund I. Tongson’s Beach Volleyball Tournament on Tuesday at Jerry Sy’s Private Beach Resort in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.
Led by Gelimae Villanueva and Jennifer Cosas, Abanse Negrense B defeated the fancied Abanse Negrense A team of Alexa Polidario and Erjane Magdato in the finals, 21-19, 17-21, 19-17.
On their way to the championship round, Abanse Negrense B’s Villanueva and Cosas cruised to a come-from-behind 19-21, 21-10, 15-7 victory over Silay’s Honey Grace Cordero and Mary Jolyn Ebro.
Abanse Negrense A’s Polidario and Magdato, on the other hand, had an easy 21-10, 21-12 straight-set triumph over Sipalay’s pair of Jenny Mar Senares and Jessalen Moises.
Sipalay’s Senares and Moises salvaged a bronze medal finish in the two-day beach volleyball tournament after defeating Silay’s Cordero and Ebro, 17-21, 21-15, 15-11, in the battle for third place.
Meanwhile, Spartan’s Jayrack dela Noche and Christian Marcelino bagged the men’s beach volleyball gold medal with a 21-19, 21-14 triumph over Silay’s Alexander Iraya and Louie Pudadera.
Heading into the championship round, Spartan’s Dela Noche and Marcelino hacked out a 21-15, 21-15 straight-set victory over Maylan’s tandem of Benny Martinez and John Louie Rebo.
Iraya and Pudadera, on the other hand, advanced to the gold medal round with a 21-18, 19-21, 15-5 victory over Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias’ (CSAV) Mike Beronio and Marvin Paulite.
CSAV’s Beronio and Paulite clinched the men’s beach volleyball’s third-place trophy with a 21-13, 21-16 sweep over Maylan’s Martinez and Rebo.
