MANILA – The wait is over. Alas Pilipinas will finally step onto the global stage today as it makes its long-anticipated debut in the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship — and it will do so before a roaring home crowd at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Head coach Angiolino Frigoni made it clear his young squad carries no fear, only pride, hope, and the hunger to compete against the world’s best.

“We don’t have anything to lose. The opponents have something to lose, not us,” Frigoni declared. “For us, it is very important to play, to see that we improve. We have a dream, but it’s our dream.”

Bannered by veterans Bryan Bagunas and Marck Espejo and powered by a new generation of stars — including UAAP MVP Josh Ybañez and NCAA MVP Louie Ramirez — Alas Pilipinas will test its mettle in its opening match against Tunisia, a tall and skilled squad that Frigoni himself respects.

“It’s a good team. They have a good culture of volleyball. They are tall, they jump. Strategy can help us, but strategy doesn’t resolve. Players will resolve,” the Italian mentor noted.

Also reinforcing the national squad are Leo Ordiales, Buds Buddin, Peng Taguibolos, Jade Disquitado, Owa Retamar, Kim Malabunga, and Jack Kalingking, with Lloyd Josafat, Vince Lorenzo, and Eco Adajar rounding out a roster built on both talent and youthful energy.

After months of preparation abroad, the Filipinos see their World Championship debut not merely as a shot at wins and losses, but as a showcase of resilience and the fighting spirit of Filipino volleyball.

“Don’t let us fight alone,” Frigoni urged. “Alas Pilipinas needs you on opening day of the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship! Stand with our men’s national team.” /PN
