MANILA – Alaska Aces needed to go all the way to Angeles, Pampanga to finally break its five-month winless streak and tally its first victory in the 2017 Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup.
Aces displayed its full arsenal from start to finish for a 90-79 win over San Miguel Beermen in the season-ending conference’s out-of-town game yesterday at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena and Cultural Center.
Import LaDontae Henton led the way with 36 points while Calvin Abueva chipped in 13 points and nine boards for Aces, which improved to 1-6.
It was also Aces’ first victory after dropping its last 14 matches dating back to the Commissioner’s Cup. Its last PBA win was on April 2 at the expense of Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 105-102.
After firing blanks early in the game, Aces suddenly pulled away behind Henton and Abel Gallinguez for a 19-9 lead. After Beermen cut the deficit to 25-29, Aces went on the run again courtesy of Joachim Thoss and Jvee Casio for a 44-30 halftime lead.
Beermen launched a huge run early in the third quarter to come to as close as 53-56 but Aces responded with conversions from Henton and Simon Enciso for a 63-53 spread heading into the fourth quarter.
Aces continued to pounce on Beermen’s erratic play early in the fourth quarter en route to building its largest lead of the match 74-57 on seven straight points from Henton, Casio and Abueva.
Arwind Santos top-scored with 29 while Alex Cabagnot and June Mar Fajardo had 14 and 12 points, respectively, for Beermen, which suffered its second straight loss and slid to a 3-3 win-loss card.
Import Tarik Bridgeman might have seen his first and last game with Beermen after failing miserably on the court with 2 points, six rebounds, one assist, and six turnovers in 21 minutes of play./PN
